Students at The University of Texas at Austin have a new email option—UTmail powered by Google. This new university-branded email service provides a 7+ GB inbox, an easy-to-use and familiar interface, and access to a number of additional collaborative applications. Students who opt-in to the new service will also be able to keep their UTmail address after graduating from the university.
Brad Englert, chief information officer, said "Completing the process of providing a new email service for the university's undergraduate and graduate students was one of our campus-wide IT goals for this year. I am excited we are launching this new service to students and pleased that it provides them with additional benefits and an email address that is theirs for life." Student email is provided by Information Technology Services at no cost to close to 50,000 undergraduate and graduate students on campus.
The new service is the result of a year-long process begun in May 2010. The effort was spearheaded by student leadership under the sponsorship of the Research and Educational Technology Committee of IT governance. After a comprehensive process, Google was selected as the finalist in November 2010. Negotiations were completed and the contract signed in February 2011.
Students can claim an account and choose whatever available name they like, by going to utmail.utexas.edu. Tools provided by Google are included in UTmail to help students migrate their old email from mail.utexas.edu account to their new email account.
